Vegan Salted Caramel Sauce
Okay I know this is a condiment but it is so super tasty that I decided it deserved its own post. After all, caramel is extremely versatile. Drizzle it over a fruit pie, brownies or ice cream. Dip apple or banana slices into it. Bake it into your favorite cookie recipe or drizzle it over warm banana bread. The possibilities are endless.
This recipe is taken from the great vegan blog Baker in Recovery. I’ll admit I had my doubts before making it. I absolutely adore caramel, always have. But like so many other things, I assumed it was one of those things I’d just have to give up as a vegan. But once again, like so many of those things, I learned that vegan cuisine isn’t about being denied all your favorite foods; it’s about finding awesome and creative ways to still have all those favorites and in a healthier, more flavorful, more compassionate, more eco-friendly way. Viva la Vegan!
This caramel sauce is deliciously sweet with a touch of saltiness that strikes a perfect balance. I made a batch of it and upon tasting it, promptly made a second batch while my food processor was already sticky and dripping with caramel-y goodness. Now I have a jar of the stuff just sitting in my kitchen ready to be drizzled on anything and everything or just ladled directly into my mouth. Yum, yum, yum I tell you. You will not be disappointed.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup raw almond butter
- 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp pure vanilla
To make, simple combine all the ingredients in a food processor. Blend for 2-4 minutes until it turns into a sticky, caramel texture. Next, grab a spoon and proceed to devour the entire thing.
Or, you could do as I did and drizzle it on top of a yummy dessert like this Salted Caramel and Dark Chocolate Skillet Cookie recipe from Baker in Recovery. I topped our Skillet Cookie with fresh coconut vanilla ice cream made in our new ice cream maker. The kids had a fabulous time watching our ice cream, well, turn into ice cream. But throw any kind of non-dairy ice cream on top and drop globs of this salted caramel sauce on top and you will be over the moon.
Happy eating!
I dont have coconut oil on hand and I want this NOW! Lol What is another vegan substitute that can be used. Can you use evoo?
Oh man. No, don’t use evoo. Do you have vegan butter like Earth Balance? Try melting that down and adding a little non-dairy milk if needed to thicken it up. Good luck!

Your blog is great, but it’s really hard to read your recipes when you don’t list the ingredients and measurements first, so I would recommend it in the future (or even adding them to existing posts). I’m glad you noted that this tastes like caramel, because it would be impossible for me to picture what the ingredients you used taste like together. Sounds tasty though. 🙂
Yes yes yes! Thanks Heather. I’ve realized the need to begin writing my posts this way, as well as to go back and update my older posts. I’m away from my computer for a few days but will implement this change soon. Thanks for your patience and for stopping by my blog!
